Summary
9 carat gold cameo brooch made by Edward Schafer, Melbourne, Victoria, circa 1890.
Typical of Schafer's work, this brooch is large compared to other cameo brooches made during this period.
It was quite common at the time for gold frames to be crafted locally, in this instance by Schafer, with the fitted cameo carved overseas, usually in Italy.
Physical Description
Oval cameo brooch featuring a reclining nude female with winged putto either side, all in white. A sailboat can be seen in the distance, set against the brown background. Cameo has a plain gold setting.
