Summary

Rose gold brooch made by Rosenthal, Aronson & Co, circa 1910. It may have been made to show support for the women's suffrage movement. The brooch features a round cut natural green peridot to one side, an old round brilliant cut diamond to the centre and a round cut natural amethyst to the other side. These are the colours of the suffragette movement, green for hope, white for purity and violet for dignity, which as GWV can also stand for `Give Women Votes'.

Victorian women gained the right to vote in 1908 after years of campaigning. Victoria was the last state in Australia to grant women the right to vote in state and federal elections.
