Summary
Cameo and fringe brooch made by Lamborn & Wagner, Melbourne, Victoria, circa 1870.
This brooch is a good example of a high point in jewellery manufacturing in Melbourne by Lamborn and Wagner. It incorporates two elements of the latest London jewellery fashion of the time; large cameos and the use of decorative trims such as fringes and tassels, both of which Lamborn and Wagner used with considerable effect alongside their trademark gold 'leaf' style of border.
Lamborn & Wagner were an early manufacturer of jewellery in Melbourne established by William Lamborn and Leopold Wagner in 1856. The company traded until 1884.
Physical Description
Oval cameo brooch featuring a white winged figure and draped female set against a chocolate brown background. An ornate golden leave border frames the top section of the cameo whilst pointed gold fringing hangs from the bottom edge in a symmetrical, graduated arrangement, resembling a V-shape.
