Summary
Queen Victoria Golden Jubilee brooch, made by Kozminsky, Melbourne to commenorate Queen Victoria's golden jubilee in 1887. The use of precious stones in Australian colonial jewellery is uncommon. The cost and the difficulties in importing the stones contributed to this. Pieces can be found with just a few local precious stones but this brooch has a significant number of precious stones. This brooch, with the royal cypher monogram 'VR', 'Victoria Regina', incorporates diamonds, rubies and sapphires, is set in gold, is very special and was a very expensive piece of jewellery in its day.
Significance
Few commemorative pieces of Australian made jewellery relating to Queen Victoria have survived. Apart from this brooch, the only other 'Jubilee' brooch recorded is in Schofield, p.42, maker unknown. The brooch is presented in an rare 19th century Kozminsky box.
