Summary

Gold leather strappy sandals with gold block heel approx 6cm high. Made by the Parker Shoe Company, and 'styled' in New York. The shoes were worn by Christobel Mattingley in Toorak, Melbourne, with her 'going away' dress, reg. no. SH 93.1056. She married David Mattingly at St. John's Church of England, Toorak, on 12 December 1953 with the reception at The Grosvenor, Toorak (now demolished).

Christobel is a respected Australian author.

According to the Powerhouse Museum, the Parker Shoe Company was established by Malcolm Parker, who manufactured quality fashion shoes in Australia from 1930 until the late 1960s. These dates may not be entirely accurate. In 1928 Malcom Parker, of the Parker Shoe Company, then of Clifton Hill, appeared before a Parliamentary Shoe Committee to defend the use of machinery from the British United Shoe Machinery Company (Argus, 30 October 1928, p.10). In 1941 Parker Shoe Company was advertised in The Argus as being exclusive to Georges (5 April, p.15S). According to the Australian Securities & Investments Commission, the business name Parker Shoe Company Proprietary Limited was not deregistered until 1980.

Physical Description

Gold leather strappy sandals with gold block heel approx 6cm high. The upper sole is in tan coloured leather with two separate gold manufacturer's stamps. There are two narrow gold straps running behind the heel and a single gold leather strap across the ankle which buckles into a small silver metal buckle. Four narrow gold leather straps criss-cross four times to form the front of the foot. The toe is opened and slightly rounded.
