Summary
Gladstone Bag made circa 1900 and used by John King Davis on his nautical journeys, including as the Chief Officer of SY Nimrod during the British Imperial Antarctic Expedition, 1907-1909, led by Ernest Shackleton. This is part of Museum Victoria's collection of artefacts from the 'Heroic Era' exploration of Antarctica.
John King Davis is a very significant Antarctic navigator as Chief Officer on the Nimrod on Ernest Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909, Master of the Aurora for Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-1914 and Captain of the Discovery for the first BANZARE voyage 1929-1930, also under Douglas Mawson. The Australian Antarctic base Davis is named in his honour.
Physical Description
Large, brown leather gladstone bag. Two cardboard labels tied to handles. Paste marks where other labels have been stuck on and worn off. Inside lined with brown canvas, with side pockets of lining material. Small leather label with gold lettering. Bag has two leather handles, and two straps to secure.
