Summary
Respirator bag that is part of an Australian air raid precautions uniform, 1941-1945. The full uniform comprises of a steel helmet inscribed 'SP' (stretcher party); brassards (armbands), one white two blue with 'ARP' in red, and gas mask in khaki shoulder pack.
The uniform was worn over civilian clothes to constitute Civil Defence uniform for air raid activities during World War II.
The provenance of the uniform is not recorded, but the donor's aunt (?), Gwen Luly, ran the Altona Air Raid Precautions, and the daughter of one of her neighbours, Vera Lugton, was also an Air Raid Warden.
Physical Description
Bag is box-shaped khaki canvas, heavily stitched all round, with a top flap that has folded in corners and two bronze coloured domes in either corner to fasten, a 2.5cm khaki webbing strap with D- ring attached on one side and adjustable clip, a tab on either side of the back with string threaded through.
