Summary
Stirrup pump, one of two found in the large downstairs storeroom at Simpson's Glove Factory Richmond, in 1989.
According to Mr Arthur Atkins these stirrup pumps were bought and kept in case of emergency during World War II as a precaution against fires caused by incendiary bombs. Simpson's had an air raid shelter. A shield used by the Air Raid Patrol Warden was also found. Bottom of pump was placed in a bucket of water, secured by foot and hand pumped.
Physical Description
Cast metal, painted green with red handle. Comprises main body with parallel foot plate to hold the pump during operation. A handle extends from the top.
