Pair of brown leather wool-lined lace-up boots used as an afterwork indoor slipper at Antarctic stations. Worn at some time between 1960 and 1993.

This is part of Museum Victoria's collection of artefacts from the post-war era of scientific exploration of Antarctica.

Physical Description

These boots are maroon in colour and are made using heavy duty crepe for the soles. They are lined with lambswool and have a clip fastening. The leather has been very strongly stitched.

Significance

Protective clothing is important in Antarctica even after work. This type of boot was used as indoor slippers because, due to the separation of huts, expeditioners would have to go outside frequently to visit other huts.
