The Silver Cake Clock commissioned by Sidney Myer and made by J.W. Steeth & Son for the centenary of Melbourne celebrations that took place during 1934-35. A competition was held to commemorate the occasion, with the grand prize being a solid silver Birthday Cake Clock, commissioned by the Myer Emporium and meticulously crafted by the renowned Melbourne silversmiths, James Steeth and Son, makers of the Melbourne Cup, this prize clock is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria.
These stamps were given away at the Centenary People's Fair, known as 'Joyland', set up on Batman Avenue in 1934. for every 3 pence spent at the Fair the visitor would receive one stamp. These stamps (up to 260) could then be stuck in a souvenir program and then posted to the offices of the Fair to go into the running to win the solid silver Birthday Cake Clock prize, worth £500.00. There were 113 further cash prizes, to make up a total of £1000.00.
"£1000 to be GIVEN AWAY Purchase a Souvenir Stamp Book at "JOYLAND." Save the stamps which are given in exchange for all money spent at "JOYLAND," including the purchases of a piece of Birthday Cake, place the stamps in your book and at the conclusion of "JOYLAND'S" season the one returning the greatest number of stamps will receive a solid silver Clock valued at £500, the design of which is an exact replica of the Birthday Cake. 2nd Prize, £200 Cash; 3rd Prize £100; 4th Prize £50; 10 prizes at £5; 20 prizes at £2/10/-; 20 prizes at £1; 60 prizes at 10/-."
