Summary

Home Journal sewing pattern for a woman's nightdress, to fit 36" bust, 31" waist, and 40" hips. Nightdress has notched collar trimmed with ruffle, buttons to natural waist, and has gathers under the bust for shaping. Bishop sleeves are full length and end with cuff. Skirt ties at the back of waist, and is shaped to be fitted at waist and hips before flaring out. It is unclear from pattern envelope how long skirt is, although most likely estimate is below-knee length.

This design was probably printed in the Australian Home Journal during or just after 1951. It is consistent with the style and pattern numbering of other designs from this period, including pattern No. 10,592 which is also held in Melbourne Museum's collection and which dates to May 1951.

Physical Description

Brown paper pattern features on front of pattern black and white illustration of front view of sewing pattern design, and smaller line drawing of back view, as well as pattern schematic on the left side of envelope. The Home Journal Pattern logo is printed vertically in capital serif font between the schematic and the illustrations. The back of the envelope is printed with black text describing generic cutting out and sewing instructions for all Australian Home Journal patterns. The envelope has glued centre front and bottom seams, and an unsealed triangular pocket flap. The front of the envelope has been torn, and a piece which would show the top of the schematic is missing. There are other small tears around the top of the envelope. The envelope contains paper pattern pieces which are still factory folded, with no signs of use. Pieces are identified with blue ink stamps.
