Summary
Alternative Name(s): Pin, Button
Remembrance Day badge, also commemorating Anzac Day, made in 1918 for fund-raising by the South Australian State War Council and the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia (predecessor to the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL)). Anzac Day was also known as Remembrance Day at this time.
Anzac Day is an Australian national holiday to commemorate the landing at Gallipoli by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) on 25 April 1915. The day was officially designated as 'Anzac Day' on 25 April 1916. It became the proper noun 'Anzac' under Federal Government legislation in 1921. Remembrance Day, marking the armistice which ended World War I, is observed on the 11 November.
Physical Description
Celluloid-coated paper badge in a shield shape with a red, white and blue ribbon (with frayed ends) knotted through a slot at the top. The design features a map of Australia in gold, surmounted by a red crown and enclosed by a green wreath. A blue scroll (the blue ink has slightly missed the black outline) overlays the wreath, with another gold scroll below, both overlaid with black inscriptions. The reverse is printed in extended text, in black and blue. Two two layers of the badge have become delaminated.
