Summary
Pencil Drawing by Thomas Le. It depicts the initial attempts of Mai's husband's family to escape and the lengths Mai went to, carrying a crippled woman on her back for two years, to ensure the escape's success. It is one of a series of illustrations commissioned by the Immigration Museum used to tell the story of Mai Ho a Vietnamese 'boat person' who arrived in Australia in the 1970s. Copies of the illustrations were displayed but Thomas decided to donate the originals to the collection. Thomas is also a Vietnamese migrant who arrived in Australian in 1978 after leaving Vietnam.
Physical Description
Pencil drawing in colour. The first frame depicts two soldiers delivering the news that their boat has been nationalised, the devastation associated with this news is represented by the dark shadow that falls across the frame. The second frame shows Mai carrying a handicapped woman on her back, there is a communist party propaganda poster in the background which the woman is pointing to, showing her association with the communist government.
