Summary
Embroidery believed to have been made by Melbourne girl Mary Ann Lord, circa 1880, and exhibited by her (probably as part of a school display) at the Melbourne International Exhibition (MIE), 1 October 1880 - 30 April 1881.
Although the name of Mary Ann Lord could not be found in the catalogue of the 1880 Melbourne Exhibition, the work appears to be of the right era, judging by theme, materials used, and style. The donor's step-mother recalls being taken to the 1880 exhibition by her father to view this work, which was made by her sister, on display.
The Ladies Court at both the 1880 and 1888 Exhibitions was criticised by reviewers under the pseudonym 'A Lady' for the poor-quality of the work displayed, and its generally derivative nature. Nevertheless, his piece is evidence of public enthusiasm for the exhibtion and eagerness to participate.
Physical Description
