Summary

This black velvet sash with a red velvet and gold boarder, and eight pointed star medallion of gold bullion and sequins, was worn by members of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows.

The Grand United Order of Oddfellows is a voluntary association which seeks to provide assistance to its members in times of sickness, death or unemployment. It was established in England in the late 1700's, when groups of independent lodges became part of this larger organisation. The Order began in Australia during in1848. In 1854, the Port Phillip District of Grand United Order of Oddfellows separated from the NSW branch to establish the Grand United Order of Oddfellows in Victoria. In 1877, the Queensland lodges also separated and established their own management committee.

The Grand United Order of Oddfellows is the oldest branch friendly society in the world. Its motto is 'Friendship, Love and Truth' and it is the proud boast of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows that there are no artificial barriers to membership, as membership is open to all, and any member may attain the office of Grand Master or other principal position in the hierarchy of the Order.

Physical Description

Sash of black velvet with red velvet border. Front of sash has embroidered gold medallion of gold bullion and sequins in the form of an 8-point star with raised centre. Front and back of sash cross over below hip and are joined with gold cord and decorated with gold bullion covered button and tassels. Ends of sash trimmed with gold fringe. Sash is lined with polished red cotton.
