Other Details: Dr. John Chapman produced this bronze medal in 1988 to mark the bicentenary of the Charlotte medal. This medal was presented to the museum by Dr. Chapman and has been engraved MUSEUM OF VICTORIA. The medal incorporates a reproduction the 1788 'Charlotte' medal from the Chapman Collection, featuring a depiction of the Charlotte at anchor in Botany Bay and a written account of key points of the ship's journey from London.

Physical Description

A bronze medal which incorporates a replica of the 1788 'Charlotte' medal from the Chapman Collection; this features a depiction of the Charlotte at anchor in Botany Bay and a written account of key points of the ship's journey from London. The medal was supplied in a black box but this (and the white silk ribbon in it) have caused the medal to tone.

Significance

The original 'Charlotte' medal was inscribed by hand as a memento of the voyage of the Charlotte as part of the First Fleet. The Charlotte was one of six convict transports and two warships that arrived in Botany Bay on 20 January 1788. The medal is held in the collection of the issuer of this medal, Dr John Chapman. -L.J.
