Physical Description

A bronze striking of the commemorative medal (37 mm diameter). It features a young head of Queen Victoria wearing a coronet and a Victory flying above a globe bearing a torch of knowledge and a Victor's wreath from Australia towards the USA.

Obverse Description

At centre within a ring divided by six shields, head on Queen Victoria facing left wearing coronet and pearl necklace, around, EXHIBITION MELBOURNE; on ring between shields, VICTORIA S.AUSTRALIA QUEENSLAND W.AUSTRALIA N.S.WALES TASMANIA; around on brioad rim, COMMEMORATION MEDAL + AUSTRALASIA 1875 + PHILADELPHIA 1876 + ; makers name STOKES & MARTIN in tiny letters between ring and broad rim at 06; I.H. incuse on truncation.

Reverse Description

Victory flying (with butterfly wings) above globe from Australia towards USA holding torch of knowledge above head and offering Victor's wreath; behind, Southern Cross; In exergue: STOKES AND MARTIN / MELBOURNE ; above exergue line on left, J.H.
