Summary

Large side mat which is one of a set of three embroidered side mats, part of the dowry of Irene Soumilas. Irene migrated to Australia from the Greek Island of Lefkas in 1958 to be married in 1959. Her dowry travelled in two trunks by ship, although she travelled by air. Many of her dowry items were made by local craftswomen, although other items were given to her by family and friends still living in Greece.

Physical Description

Large square side mat with embroidered design in gold thread on ground of cream-coloured, sheer, fine cotton/muslin. There is a repeated design in each corner of the mat and an inner border of a repeating pattern composed of three different motifs. The designs incorporate floral and leaf motifs as well as geometric patterns and lines in embroidery and pulled thread work.
