Summary
Needlepoint tracing wheel, part of a collection of sewing materials used by Italian migrant Georgia Dereani, circa 1957. Also called a pattern wheel or dart wheel, it is used to transfer markings from sewing patterns onto fabric with or without the use of tracing paper, and can be used to make slotted perforations. Such markings might include pleats, darts, buttonholes, notches or placement lines for appliques or pockets.
Georgia Dereani, her husband and infant son immigrated to Australia from Trieste, Italy, in 1955. They spent the first five years of their lives in Victoria at Bonegilla Migrant Camp. Georgina and her husband became staff members at Bonegilla and were allocated private accommodation, which Georgina went to great lengths to make comfortable, purchasing many household items around Albury, NSW. Georgia also loved to sew and crochet, and often made items for her house and her friends at Bonegilla.
