Upright vacuum cleaner made by Ediswan Swan Electric Co. Ltd, London, England, in 1926.

Acquired by donor's mother-in-law, Mrs Catherine Harding, as a wedding gift in Townsville in 1926. Mrs Harding moved to a flat in St Kilda in 1936 and later purchased a house in Celia Street, Burwood. She always used the vacuum cleaner until 1982 when she changed the carpet to high pile and acquired an Electrolux. She continued to use it on felt tiles. Attachments not used often, perhaps for curtains and picture rails.

Physical Description

Upright Ediswan vacuum cleaner with one dust bag. Wide vacuum head connected with engine. Red strip of rubber runs around front edge of suction head. Metal label on front centre slides to one side to allow the attachment of the hose, rod and other accessories. Switch to operate is on rear of handle, the electric cord is held by grey insulating tape with the rest wrapped from top to bottom along length of handle. Dust bag held by large clip with chain. Three small wheels, one at rear, two at front.
