It was preceeded by a Victorian Exhibiton held in Melbourne 6 November 1872 - 8 January 1873. Vienna also hosted an international exhibition from 1 May - 1 November 1873.

An unissued specimen bronze prize medal of the 1873 exhibition. It features a female representing the Colony of Victoria standing three quarters left before rural and industrial scene; around, INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION * 1873 *; in exergue, DITISSIMA TERRA , the artist's name J.HOGARTH FEC. and the designers name O.R. CAMPBELL DES.
