Summary
Hand made marionette depicting the fairy tale character The Wicked Witch riding on a broomstick. It was manufactured and operated in Melbourne by Alex and Murray Smith, who performed as part of Le Forgeron Marionettes from 1930 until 1956.
Physical Description
The Flying Witch has a green face and hands. She wears a black dress with green sequin detailing on the bodice, as well as a matching black cape and petticoat. Her pointy black hat has been constructed out of wood and papier mache. The witch's facial expression is exaggerated and severe, with an especially large nose (which is damaged on the tip). The Flying Witch sits upon a wooden broom. There are operating strings attached to numerous parts of her, including her head, limps and shoulders. The feet have been weighted.
