Summary
Flintlock pocket pistol, cal. 88 bore (approx. .375), double barrelled, screw off steel smoothbore barrels, 3.90cm long.
Marked as made by Nock & Co, London. Henry Nock (1741-1804) was a notable London gunsmith and became Master of the Gunmaker's Company in 1802. This pistol is probably a contemporary forgery from the Birmingham gun trade.
Physical Description
Box lock brass action with steel breech tape on LH.side and steel hammer, engraved military accoutrements on both sides of lock, 'NOCK & CO' engraved on L.H.side in an oval frame, 'LONDON' engraved on R.H.side in similar frame. Stamped on fram L.H. side opposite upper barrel '1'. Oval steel triggerguard with floral motif. Wooden flat sided grips. The breech tap on the L.H. side directs the ignition charge from the priming pan to the barrel charge, so that both barrels can be loaded, but fired consecutively, rather than simultaneously.
