Summary
'The Optical Magic Lantern Journal and Photographic Enlarger' was a monthly British lantern magazine first issued in 1889. In 1904 the name of the publication was changed to 'The Optical Lantern and Cinematograph Journal'.
Content of the journal typically included adverts, letters from readers, as well as articles relating to aspects of magic lantern showings. This particular issue contains articles such as 'Crystal Palace Photo Exhibition', 'Substitutes for Hydrogen for the Limelight', 'Registration; or the Art of Dissolving with Precision' and 'A Home-Made Lantern'.
This journal is part of the Francis Collection of pre-cinematic apparatus and ephemera, acquired by the Australian and Victorian Governments in 1975. David Francis was the curator of the National Film and Sound Archive of the British Film Institute as well as being a co-founder of the Museum of the Moving Image in London, which was operational between 1988 and 1999.
Physical Description
Plain white paper booklet of twenty pages with black typeset. Ten pages (i-x) consist purely of advertising. These are interspersed within the articles. Ten pages (107-116) contain the main content of the journal.
