Summary
Model of the armed transport ship Bounty commanded by Captain William Bligh. Under the command of Captain William Bligh, the Bounty was sent to Tahiti in 1789 by the Royal Navy to collect breadfruit as part of a British government plan to cultivate this crop to feed slaves in the West Indies. Fletcher Christian led a mutiny which resulted in Bligh and others being cast adrift in a ship's boat which eventually reached Timor. The Bounty was later sailed to Pitcairn Island where it was burned by some of the mutineers in 1790 who then settled on the island with a group of 11 Tahitian women.
This 1:48 scale model was built by Edward Freeman Prentice and was donated to the Museum in 1952.
