The balance was made by J. Cole in Melbourne. These scales were purchased by the Weights & Measures branch in 1950 from the Union Bank of Australia Ltd. They were used by the branch for the testing of local standards when they were returned for reverification. They were subsequently donated to the Museum of Victoria in 1994 by the Office of Trade Measurement (formerly Weights & Measures branch).
