Summary
"The British" marking machine used for laundry marking. It was used by the Hardie Trading Company, Melbourne, from around 1930 to 1954, when it was donated to Museums Victoria. The design may date to the early 1920s, when A. & C. Jenner patented a 'Machine for marking garments' ('US1456447 (A)), July 1922, and 'Improvements in printing apparatus for marking garments for laundry purposes and the like' (GB207691 (A)), November 1922.
This type of machine uses a lever principle for setting the mark. The lever is attached directly to the type wheels, each of which contains numerals and alphabet.
