Summary

Model of the Royal Navy (County) Norfolk class heavy cruiser HMS Norfolk. HMS Norfolk was built by the Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Company at Govan and was commissioned in 1930 as the class leader of four ships, two of which were cancelled. In the 1930s Norfolk served with the Home Fleet and West Indies Station. During World War II, Norfolk took part in sorties in pursuit of German warships in the North Atlantic and North Sea. In late 1940, Norfolk joined the hunting groups searching for the German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer and German auxiliary cruisers in the South Atlantic. In December 1943, Norfolk was part of the force that tracked and destroyed the battlecruiser Scharnhorst but suffered battle damage in the engagement. Norfolk was placed in reserve in 1949 and broken up in 1950.

This model was made by E.J. Krummeck of Melbourne and was purchased by the Museum in 1941. It is part of a collection of British and Australian naval ship models purchased from Krummeck.
