Summary
Model of Royal Navy Southampton class light cruiser HMS Southampton. Built by John Brown & Co. at Clydebank Southampton was commissioned in 1937. During 1939-40 HMS Southampton was the flagship of the 2nd Cruiser Squadron with the Home Fleet and served during the Norwegian Campaign after previously being damaged while at anchor during a German air attack on Rosyth. In late 1940 Southampton joined the Mediterranean Fleet and escorted convoys to Malta. On 11 January 1941 Southamption was hit by bombs from a force of Stuka dive bombers and set on fire near Malta, later being sunk by other Royal Navy ships.
This model was built by E.J Krummeck and was purchased by the Museum in 1941. It is one of a large collection of British and Australian naval ship models built by Krummeck.
