This clay figure of a man sitting cross-legged was made in Krishnanagar province, Indial. It was exhibited at the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880, as part of a group of figures representing various castes, occupations and religious sects in India. It was gifted to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) by the India Commission of the Melbourne International Exhibition, 1880-81.

Physical Description

Figure of a man sitting cross-legged made from fired clay. The man is fired clay modeled over ferrous metal armature, he appears to have once been sitting on a base, which has now been lost. The figure is painted with a terracotta skin tone, with white markings on his face, ears and upper left arm. He is dressed in fabric; wearing a white pants and a white wrap. He has real hair on his face, head and body.
