This clay figure of a cart and driver with a pair of yoked bullocks was made in Krishnanagar province, India. It was exhibited at the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880, as part of a group of figures representing various castes, occupations and religious sects in India. It was gifted to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) by the India Commission of the Melbourne International Exhibition, 1880-81. The NGV Stock book records identify this group as 'Country Cart & Driver with pair of Yoked Bullocks'.

Physical Description

Figure of a man seated on a cart drawn by two bulls. The figure, bulls and base are made from fired clay, modeled over a ferrous metal armature with a painted surface. The cart is constructed from bamboo, bound with string and the wheels are wood and clay. A paper label is glued to the brown bull. The bulls are painted brown and white and the white bull has several symbols on its hind quarters. The figure seated in the cart has a dark-brown skin tone and is dressed in a brown turban and pants.
