This figure of a man wearing a brown and yellow belt was made in Krishnanagar province, India. It was gifted to the National Gallery by the India Commission of the Melbourne 1880 International Exhibition.
Physical Description
Figure of a man on a square base made from fired clay, painted white. The number 3 printed in black ink is written on the base. The man is fired clay modeled over ferrous metal armature, which attaches to the base. The figure is painted with a medium brown skin tone and is wearing a white pants, shirt and coat, with a twisted brown belt and is wearing a white broad brimmed hat. The object is in damaged, dirty and cracked and the textiles are dirty faded and insect damaged.
