This clay figure of a Buffalo was made in Krishnanagar province, India. It was exhibited at the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880, as part of a group of figures representing various castes, occupations and religious sects in India. It was gifted to the National Gallery of Victoria by the India Commission of the Melbourne International Exhibition, 1880-81. The NGV Stock book identifies this figure as 'A Buffalo'.
Physical Description
Figure of a bull on a base of fired clay painted white. There is a small paper label glued to the upper surface of the base. The bull is fired clay modelled over ferrous metal armature. It is painted white and has been varnished. The clay on the horns has cracked and dropped off showing the ferrous metal armatures, this is probably a result of corrosion. There are minor cracks on the upper part of the tail and on all four legs.
