Horse girth made of woven paper in Germany during World War I.
Paper was used as a substitute - 'ersatz' - by Germany during World War I, 1914-1918. This string and several other 'ersatz' objects were transferred to Museum Victoria from the Australian War Memorial in 1924, which still holds other German 'ersatz' material from World War I.
Acquired by the Museum of Victoria from the Australian War Museum (later Memorial) in 1923-24 as part of the 'Victorian allotment' by permission of Hon. F. Clarke, government representative of the State War Trophy Committee.
Physical Description
Flat paper strap with metal buckle on one and and holes with metal eyelets on the other.
