Summary

Photograph of Aubrey Lionel Bertram Hampton in military uniform around 1913, carrying a bugle. Biographic details are hand-written on the back, indicating he was serving in the 'Commonwealth Military'. His 1903 bugling certificate (ST 039478) confirms he was serving in the Commonwealth Military Forces of Victoria.

Aubrey Lionel Bertram Hampton would have been aged around 17 or 18 at the time the photograph was taken. His World War I attestation papers indicate that he served for six years with the 5th Battalion, 8th Australian Infantry Regiment, before he enlisted to serve in World War I on 18 August 1914 (service no.18). If his service in the 8th AIR had been continuous before he enlisted, he would have joined about 1908.

This photo, however, is inscribed with the date 'about 1903'. In 1903 the Commonwealth Defence Act amalgamated school cadet units into a Commonwealth Cadet Corps. The Victorian contingent alone had around 6,000 boys. (Maxwell Waugh, Soldiers Boys, p.58)
