The donor, Fritz Joachim Schlegel, was a Victorian railway employee. He served in the German Army during World War II, and was a 'camera assistant' at the time of his discharge in 1946. He appears to have arrived in Australia some time between 1952 and 1963 and lived for many years with his family near Geelong.

Small brown 24 page paybook with printed and handwritten text in German. Front cover bears eagle and German Swastika. Book contains Schlegel's photograph and signature on inside of front cover.

Printed on front cover: Soldbuch/Zugleich/Perfonalausweis. Inside pages: text includes 'Dienst grad' [rank] - hand-written text above may read 'Gefreiter' - meaning 'exempted' from menial duties (equivalent to lance-corporal). His caption and number of identity mark reads 'Inf Nachr'. Historian John Williams notes that 'Nachr' indicates an intelligence officer.
