Bill of sale for the time payment purchase of a 'Standard' Lock-Stitch sewing machine by Mrs J. Anderson from the Eastern Arcade, Melbourne, on 6 December 1883. Document consists of a small paper notebook containing payments made by the 'time payment system'. First payment 6:12:1883, last payment 19:1:1885. Cost of machine (pounds 9- 5- 0), number 372539. Sewing machine also donated to Museums Victoria - ST 033499.
Although the first page shows the purchase by a Mrs J. Anderson, later payments are made by a Mr A. Anderson. The back cover of the bill of sale provides what appears to be an address: 6 Campbell St. The 1880 Sands & McDougall's Directory lists a James Anderson on the west side (no number) of Campbell St, Collingwood. The 1885 Sands & McDougall's Directory lists a John Anderson, Plumber, in Campbell St (again no number), Collingwood, and a Mrs Hannah Anderson at 8 Campbell St (west side of street), Collingwood. The rate book for 1879 (p. 73) show a Hannah Anderson living in a 'wood house' in Campbell St, Collingwood, for which she is recorded as the owner. The rate book for 1880 (p.71) records that a James Anderson, carpenter, lives several houses away from Hannah Anderson, in a wood house owned by Esther Martin.
