Summary

Alternative Name(s): Manuscript

Diary of a soldier documenting describing enlistment, training and service at Gallipoli in 1915. The writer was a student at Trinity College, University of Melbourne, when he enlisted in August 1914 in the Public Schools Brigade. His name may have been Cook, of D Company 5th Battalion AIF.

The diary is likely to have been that displayed in Museum Victoria's Present Arms exhibition, which opened in 1991. The exhibition flyer names an 'original manuscript' by a 'L/Cpl. Cook, 5th Battalion AIF, Gallipoli 1915 (original manuscript owned by the Museum of Victoria)' (MV Library Archives 623.44294 M 986).

The diary contains details of enlistment, training and service at Gallipoli. It was found in archives of Toc H Australia Inc. Victoria and handed to the RSL by J. Herrick, Area Secretary, in May 1983. This diary was probably written after the events from notes taken at the time.
