Bernard William Patrick Bragg was a 21-year-old draftsman, cartoonist and commercial artist living in Rockhampton, Queensland, when he enlisted in September 1916. He embarked in November 1916 on the Afric, and disembarked at Plymouth, England. He fought in France from March 1917, and was Mentioned in Dispatches in July 1919. He also designed a medal for the British Expeditionary Forces. He returned to Australia in late 1919. He took up freelance illustration work. His paintings and drawings appeared in newspapers, magazines and on film posters during the 1930s, 40s and 50s. More recently he won the story writing and art work competition run by the Department of Veteran Affairs.
