Full length photographic portrait of Australian serviceman, Private Sydney Kann, 60th Battalion, AIF, 1915.
Private Kann was born in Rockhampton, Queensland. His next of kin was his mother, Mary Kann of 137 Young Street, Fitzroy, Victoria. Kann was a labourer when he joined on 6 July 1915 as a 19 years old. He joined his battalion, the 60th, in March 1916 in Eqypt before arriving in France on 29 June 1916. His battalion went into action in Fromelles on 19 July 1916, the day that Kann was reported missing in action. Informants later advised that Kann had been shot in the stomach and had survived for seven days before being brought back into the trenches. He was taken to a dressing station, where he died. His memorial is located at the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, Lille, France.
