Joseph William Witton, service # 2489, was a 28-year-old storeman from North Carlton when he enlisted on 9 July 1915. (A second enlistment paper for him is dated 28 September 1915 - the day before he embarked from Melbourne on the RMS Osterley.) He served in the 24 Infantry Battalion - 1 to 8 Reinforcements. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant and then to Company Sergeant Major, then received a gunshot wound to his hand and thigh in France on 19 November 1916. In early May 1917 he was sent back to Australia due to his wounds - hence his Welcome Home in July 1917. He re-enlisted in April 1918, and embarked on 8 May that year. This time he served in the Australian Flying Corps - Reinforcements. Special Draft, AIF Officers (Special Draft, Royal Military College Graduates), with Staff in Charge, Jugo-Slavs [Yugoslavs] and Staff in Charge, Italian Reservists.
