Summary

This stylish maroon and white Batavus 'Super Sport' is a lightweight machine typical of the type of motor cycle developed by several European manufacturers after World War II. Styling became an important feature in the sales success of these cheap lightweight forms of transport. The Batavus company was established in Holland in 1911 and initially made a range of motor cycles of up to 198 cc using a variety of Villiers, Sachs & Ilo engines, before developing a specialist reputation for mopeds.

This G50 model with pedals was acquired with a range of accessories used by the original owner including a tool bag with tools, a long leather riding coat, leather riding mittens, a helmet and three Dutch registration plates relating to its use in the Netherlands between 1966 and 1970. The owner brought this Batavus with him to Australia when he emigrated in about 1971 and subsequently used it for about 10 years in the ACT before donating it to the Museum. It is believed to have been built in about 1960. It carries ACT registration number 6-364.
