Rudolph enlisted on 19 July 1915, when he was a 23-year-old fisherman from Brighton Beach, Melbourne. He trained in Egypt and served in France, and was later awarded the Military Medal. He suffered a hernia, a severe gunshot wound to the wrist, a suppurating rupture and trench foot during his overseas service, but returned safely to Australia in April 1919.
