Summary

Souvenir handkerchief from World War I. Off white silk with the flags of the allied nations and the words "FROM THE FRONT" embroidered in corner.

The flags represented are those of France, Great Britain, Russia (Imperial flag), Belgium, Italy (backwards) and Russia (inverted). The Russian Imperial flag featuring the Imperial Standard of the Tsar was for civil or private use during World War I but was never the official Russian flag. Russia withdrew from the war following the October Revolution in 1917 - therefore this badge must have been made before this date.

Physical Description

Square off-white silk cloth, hemmed, with corner embroidery of six flags and inscription around. Small plant sheaf below. Handkerchief now has extensive foxing and is distorted out of square.
