Summary
This experimental model is fitted with a 'combination rig' designed by Captain Christopher Welch of Port Chalmers in New Zealand. Rig shape enabled the area of canvas carried aloft to be nearly doubled. This rig was never used on a full-sized vessel. It featured two masts near the centre of the hull.
Model was built between 1861 and 1873. This is not a model of the vessel 'Samuel Plimsoll' built in 1873. This model was donated to the Museum in 1888.
