Summary
Badge of the 4th Australian Machine Gun Battalion, circa 1918.
At the start of World War I every infantry battalion within the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) had a machine gun section that was responsible for the two, later four machine guns allocated to the battalion. By February 1916 these sections were combined to form companies that were responsible for the entire infantry brigade. By March 1918 these companies had been consolidated into battalions and were attached to entire divisions.
The 4th Australian Machine Gun Battalion was attached to the 4th Australian Infantry Division from May 1918 until the end of the war. The division served mostly in France before demobilisation began in late 1918, the division later merged with the 1st Australian Infantry Division. This organisational structure continued into World War II.
