Hand-written copy of an address delivered by Lieut. Colonel Y. Nagataro, Chief of the 3rd Branch of Thai war prisoners camp, Thanbyazayat, to prisoners of war. The speech was delivered at the opening of the POW camp at Thanbyazayat on 15 September 1942. The copy was written by Rohan Rivett, who asked Mr Clarke, a fellow POW, to hide the speech until after the war. Clarke managed this by rolling the paper inside the bamboo frame of his bed in the POW camp.

The address was presented to Museum Victoria by the RSL.

The Papers of Sir Edward "Weary" Dunlop in the Private Records Collection of the Australian War Memorial include a "Statement of Speech" by Lieutenant Colonel Y. Nagataro (commandant of Thanbyazayat POW camp, Thailand), 1942 (PR00926).

Physical Description

Single sheet of paper, extensively hand-written in pencil on both sides. The paper is very yellowed and worn, with torn edges and a larger tear in the upper right side that had been repaired with adhesive tape which has left a residue.
