Summary

Alternative name(s): Mobiliser, Multi-Tool Model, Display Model

This is an over-sized model (approximate scale 1:5) used for Point-of-Sale shop displays with tools and utilities that can be set in motion by an electric motor. It does not represent any particular model made by Victorinox. When activated one of the featured tools remains stationary (the reamer) while the other five can fold in and out (by internal cams); the scissors open and close.

The tools shown on this model are: large blade, short blade, scissors, bottle opener (with flathead screwdriver), a can opener (with flathead screwdriver), and a reamer.

The origin of the Swiss army knife was the need for the standardisation of equipment used by Swiss Army at the end of the nineteenth century. They needed equipment that they could eat with and clean their weapons. The first one was created by the founder of Victorinox, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener, in 1891 and had four tools: knife blade, can opener, screwdriver, reamer. Later, more tools were added as the convenience of having tools at hand became apparent. The distinctive red colour and white Swiss Cross were added in 1909, making the tool easier to see in the harsh snow conditions of the Alps experienced by defence personnel. Its versatility was also apparent for anyone working in outdoor environments, adventurers or travelers and became popular all over the world after WW2.
