Summary
Detailed scale model of the famous clipper ship "Cutty Sark", built by Mr Lance Lane over a period of 50 years from 1933 to 1984.
The original "Cutty Sark" (now preserved at Greenwich) was built by Hercules Linton at Dumbarton in 1869, for John Wills of London. She was a fully square-rigged sailing ship designed specifically for speed to compete with the "thermopylae" and other famous clippers on the china tea trade. Dimensions of the original vessel were 212 feet length, 36 feet width and 21 feet depth, with a displacement of 921 tons.
Clipper ships were the pinnacle of sail technology; sleek vessels with streamlined hulls and towering sails. They achieved record-breaking voyages by combining their speed with the use of the 'great circle route', passing far south of the iceberg line into Antarctic waters.
Physical Description
Model of the three masted sailing clipper the Cutty Sark hand made of wood, metal, thread and paint. Supported on two brass legs on a polished wooden plinth. The plinth sits inside the perspex case on brown synthetic velvet fabric.
