Typewriter of the type-bar class. It is a Remington Standard No.7, manufactured by Wyckhoff, Seamans & Benedict of Ilion, New York, U.S.A. The machine is an upstroke design, with the typebars arranged in a vertical circular basket. The serial number is 214799, indicating the year of manufacture as 1907.

The machine is fitted with a Gorin Decimal Tabulator. This device allowed the typewriter to be used in preparing tables and filling forms by moving the carriage to preset positions without repeatedly using the space bar. The Tabulator was patented by F. P. Gorin of Chicago in 1895 and the patent assigned to the Remington Company.

The machine is provided with a wooden baseboard with a detachable wooden cover.

Physical Description

Black-finished metal frame with gold decoration. Type-bars arranged in vertical circular basket with cylindrical platen on top. 1.5 inch (38 mm) ribbon carried between spools on horizontal axes. QWERTY keyboard with four rows of keys plus two shift keys. Machine is fitted with Gorin Tabulator on back of frame. Ten tabulator keys project forward beneath normal keyboard.
